About Kentucky Downs
Kentucky Downs • Franklin, Kentucky
If you are looking for a break from the normal routine, check out Kentucky Downs, a truly unique entertainment experience.
Kentucky Downs, located on this side of the Kentucky/Tennessee border in Franklin, Ky., offers year-round simulcast racing and an exciting twist during the live racing season on the only all turf European style course in the United States.
Originally named Dueling Grounds because of its proximity to a nearby piece of land that was the site of many pistol duels, the track's inaugural one-day meet was held on April 22, 1990 and was home to the world's richest steeplechase race, which carried a purse of $750,000.
The track was purchased and renamed Kentucky Downs in 1997, and now is host to six days of championship Thoroughbred turf racing each September. Corey Johnsen and Ray Reid in June of 2007 purchased 85% controlling interest in Kentucky Downs and are dedicated to bringing great racing and entertainment to the Southern Kentucky/Nashville region.
Top horses and jockeys are always a part of Kentucky Downs live racing season. The leading rider of the 2005 season was Calvin Borel, who won this year's Kentucky Derby on Street Sense and was later invited to the White House as a guest of President Bush. In 2004, Rafael Bejarano left his mark on Kentucky Downs on his way to being the nation's leading jockey in wins. Bejarano was the leading rider at Kentucky Downs and won a record six of eight races on Sept. 21, 2004.
Horses who have competed at Kentucky Downs have returned to win such prestigious races as the Breeders' Cup Distaff and the Grade I Diana Handicap at Saratoga.
Fans are invited to enjoy a casual lunch in the spacious clubhouse and restaurant, or get up close to the action from our outdoor grandstand area. Kentucky Downs has also opened the Longshots Sports Bar where beer, wine and mixed drinks are served and sports and racing is featured on large screen TVs.
