Kentucky Downs Wins Prestigious Business Honor in Southern Kentucky
Franklin, Kentucky - October 22, 2009 - Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Ky has been named the recipient of the Outstanding Business Leader Award by the Franklin-Simpson Chamber of Commerce.
"This is good news in the midst of a down year for Kentucky's breeding and horse racing business. This award gives us the opportunity to chalk up a win for horse racing and shows what can be accomplished by working together with the community," said Jon Goodman, General Manager of Kentucky Downs.
According to Steve Thurmond, Executive Director of the Franklin-Simpson Chamber of Commerce, the award is exclusive to only one business annually, and it is a very prestigious and coveted honor in south central Kentucky.
"Kentucky Downs has become a vital part of this community. In addition to the obvious business they bring to Simpson County, Kentucky Downs has taken a leadership role in the support of many worthwhile efforts. I can name numerous agencies and organizations who would be struggling financially if not for the kindness and generosity of the management of Kentucky Downs. They have truly placed the bar at a very high level for other organizations in our community to aspire to reach," Thurmond commented.
Thurmond said that there were a number of reasons why Kentucky Downs was chosen as this year's outstanding business recipient. In addition to the charitable contributions, Kentucky Downs brings thousands of visitors to Franklin and Simpson County each year and they promote the area world wide on a regular basis, Thurmond said.
Kentucky Downs has supported many various causes in Simpson County. During September's live race season, the track helped raise money for five local charities through its Southern Nights Benefit Bash. Kentucky Downs is also a major contributor to the AdvanceKentucky education program. An initiative of Kentucky Science & Technology Corporation, AdvanceKentucky supports Franklin Simpson High School/Simpson County Public Schools in its efforts to advance rigorous math, science and English course work. Other local groups supported by Kentucky Downs are Franklin Simpson Renaissance, Franklin Simpson Arts Council, Franklin Simpson High School Athletic Council, Franklin Simpson Literacy, The African American Heritage Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Franklin and the Gentleman's Club for the funding of a pavilion at a local park.
Kentucky Downs is America's only European-style race course featuring turf racing, and only turf racing every September during its live season. The facility is open year-round for simulcast racing, special events and as one of the premier dining and entertainment destinations in Simpson County. Call (270) 586-7778.
